Throttle Cable Replacement

When you press the accelerator pedal in your car, a cable which runs from the pedal to the throttle body, or carburetor, opens the throttle plate which allows air and fuel to enter the engine’s intake. When the pedal is released, it springs back up due to the throttle return spring. The throttle cable is exposed to the environmental elements under the hood, which may cause it to seize up or otherwise not move freely. If this happens, the cable can break and the throttle may stick or become unresponsive. If the throttle cable sticks in the open position, the engine will race. If the throttle cable seizes in the closed position, the accelerator pedal may be difficult to press or will not operate the throttle at all.

A binding or seized throttle control cable can cause your engine to race, putting you in a potentially dangerous situation or causing internal damage to your engine. | Newer vehicles equipped with drive-by-wire systems do not have a throttle control cable.

The vehicle hood is raised and supported. The engine trim cover is removed and the cable is disconnected from the throttle lever. | The defective throttle control cable is disconnected from the accelerator and removed from the fire wall. | The new throttle control cable is installed in reverse order through the firewall then connected to the throttle lever and accelerator pedal. | The throttle is tested to ensure it operates smoothly without binding. The engine trim cover is reinstalled. | The vehicle hood is closed and vehicle is road tested to ensure proper operation.

It may be possible to lubricate the throttle control cable if symptoms are noticed in the early stages. Otherwise, the throttle control cable does not require regular maintenance or servicing. If your throttle is binding or you suspect a throttle control cable problem is occurring, have one of our expert mechanics inspect and replace it.

The throttle control cable is vital to the operation of your engine’s fuel delivery. If it is not operating properly, you may experience difficulty controlling your throttle while in traffic. Have a faulty or seized throttle control cable replaced immediately.

Throttle Cable Repair

The driver controls the speed or acceleration of the car with the help of the accelerator cable, or throttle cable. This cable forms a connection between the accelerator pedal and the throttle body. It has an outer casing made of metal and rubber, while the inner cable is built with metal wire. With repeated use and friction, the accelerator cable can become worn out and ragged, and becomes more susceptible to breaking. Keep an eye out for signs that indicate that you must replace the accelerator cable.

If the accelerator cable is broken or frayed, it cannot relay the signal to the engine. The engine, in turn, cannot open the butterfly valves and pump oxygen into the carburetor. | The accelerator cable might not perform optimally because of slack. Our mechanic will examine it carefully and check for signs of wear. If there aren’t any, they could eliminate the problem by simply tightening it.

The vehicle hood is raised and supported | The defective accelerator cable is removed | The new accelerator cable is installed | The throttle is exercised to make it operates smoothly without binding | The vehicle hood is closed and road tested for proper operation

It is advisable to get a mechanic to check the accelerator cable in your car if you notice the accelerator is abnormally inflexible and does not come back up right away. If you face a situation where the accelerator stops responding and you’re driving on a busy road, use the remaining momentum you have to pull over to the side of the road. Call and schedule an appointment with YourMechanic to fix this problem.

A faulty or broken accelerator cable can result in your car coming to complete halt in the middle of traffic or worse, on an incline. Typically, accelerator cables are highly durable, but you should request a mechanical inspection every six months to ensure that it remains in perfect working order.

Car Battery Cable Replacement

Replacing a car battery cable involves disconnecting damaged or corroded leads and installing fresh cables to restore reliable electrical flow between the battery, starter motor, and chassis ground. With the engine turned off and keys removed, always disconnect the negative (black) terminal first to prevent electrical arcing, followed by the positive (red) terminal. Unbolt the secondary ends from the starter solenoid, fuse box, or engine ground, route the new cables through the existing brackets, and ensure ground connections are scraped clean of rust or paint for solid metal-to-metal contact.
