Brake Light Switch Replacement

The brake light switch is a mechanical switch activated when you press the brake pedal. The switch has a plunger in it that contacts a lever in the brake pedal assembly. As that plunger is depressed when you push on the brake pedal, the contacts in the brake light switch closed and voltage flows to the brake lights — turning them on. The brake light switch is also in the circuit that controls the cruise control disengagement and the shift interlock safety feature installed on all newer cars. Failure of the brake light switch occurs due to wear on the internal electrical contacts in the switch, poor switch terminal connections, maladjustment of the switch, or damage to the brake pedal assembly. When to consider replacing the brake light switch? No brake lights. If depressing the brake pedal does not cause any of the brake lights to illuminate, the continuity of the switch will be tested. If only one brake light is out, then the issue is not the switch but rather the bulb, bulb socket or brake light circuit integrity. Unable to shift out of park. The brake light switch is also wired into the shift interlock mechanism. If you are unable to shift out of park, with your foot on the brake, check to see if the brake lights will illuminate as you push the pedal. If they do not illuminate, failure of the brake light switch may be the cause of the no shift. Intermittent operation of the brake lights or late operation. The brake light switch has to be in the proper position, and work consistently if the brake lights are to come on the instant you press the brake pedal. The switch can sometimes require adjustment, or the contacts may degrade, causing inconsistent operation of the switch. How do mechanics replace the brake light switch? The switch is first tested using a multimeter, including the terminal contacts to the switch, to determine if it is faulty. If the switch is functioning, the entire circuit must be tested to determine the cause of no brake lights. Should the switch be judged defective, the switch is unthreaded from the mounting boss near the brake pedal assembly. The new switch is threaded in and locked with an appropriate locknut once the new switch is properly adjusted. The operation of the switch is tested to ensure instant illumination of the brake lights upon pressing the brake pedal. Is it safe to drive with a brake light switch problem? No. Should the brake light switch have failed, it is unsafe to drive the vehicle because drivers behind you will have no indication that you are slowing, intend to slow, or are stopped. Always address a failure of this type promptly to ensure your safety while driving. When replacing the brake light switch keep in mind: The mechanic will test the brake light switch directly to ensure that the issue is not elsewhere in the brake light circuit. Occasionally, the issue is a maladjusted switch or a loose contact, and the mechanic can resolve the problem without switch replacement.

Combination Switch Assembly Replacement

A combination switch assembly has several functions. This component is connected to your turn signal indicator and controls all of the functions on the lever. The combination switch assembly adjusts the high and low beams on your headlights, indicates when you are turning left or right, and activates the hazard lights when needed. It turns on the windshield wipers in the front as well as the rear if equipped. The switch also activates the windshield washer fluid. The switch is located inside the steering column and connects to the lever with multiple wires that run to the various components that the switch controls. When the switch fails, none of the components attached to it will work. However, a faulty switch may work periodically or for some components and not others until it fails completely.

The combination switch assembly activates and adjusts all components attached to the turn signal | lever. | The steering column must be removed to access the switch. The combination switch will need to be replaced not repaired. | The combination switch will vary based on make and model and even year because different controls have been added to the turn signal lever.

The combination switch assembly is verified that it needs to be replaced. The battery is then disconnected. | The steering column trim panels are removed for access and the defective combination switch assembly is disconnected and removed. | The new combination switch assembly is installed and connected. | The trim panels are reinstalled. The battery is then reconnected and the combination switch assembly is tested for operation. | The vehicle is road tested to ensure proper operation of the combination switch assembly.

The same symptoms that indicate a failed combination switch assembly may also be caused by other problems such as blown fuses. Have one of our expert mechanics check out the issue and rule out other causes before replacing the combination switch.

If the combination switch assembly stops working, you won’t be able to drive after dark because the headlights won’t come on. You could also get a traffic violation for failing to signal when turning or even cause an accident. Have it inspected and replaced if necessary as soon as possible.

Car Door Lock Switch Replacement

Door lock switches are electrical rocker switches that are used to lock and unlock car doors. When you activate the switch, it sends a signal to the door lock relay to activate the door lock actuator inside the door. Due to frequent use, the switches and electrical currents running through them eventually fail, requiring replacement.

Many modern vehicles have a complete lock assembly which needs to be replaced if the switch dies.

Test the operation of the electric door locks. | Test the fuse for that circuit. | Test the relay. | Replace the faulty door lock switch. | Test for proper operation of electric door locks.

Door lock systems are not a part of regular maintenance, but it’s not rare for the switches to die. If you notice that your vehicle is not locking and unlocking when you press the corresponding buttons, it’s time to schedule an inspection.

The door lock switch acts as a remote for the door lock actuator, which is responsible for locking and unlocking your vehicle’s doors. When you press the lock or unlock button, the switch triggers the actuator, and the door is locked or unlocked. When the lock switch dies, the actuator has no way of being activated, and your door locks will stop functioning.

Headlight Switch Replacement

The headlamp switch allows you to turn on the lights. If the switch does not work, you will not be able to turn on the lights. Not only is it unsafe to drive the car without proper lights, but it is also illegal.

The switch may only be available at the dealer. YourMechanic will find the cost and availability | from a local dealer. Your vehicle may have a combination switch, which combines the headlight switch and turn signal switch in one assembly.

Inspect the switch. | Test the fuses. | Remove and replace the switch if found faulty. | Check operation of all vehicle lighting.

A mechanic should inspect all the lights in the car during every major service event. If the lights do not come on, the mechanic should inspect the fuse, wiring, and connectors. It is common for the lens to get dirty and not allow enough light to shine through. You should keep the headlamp lens clean and free of oxidation. Mechanics can use a special lens oxidation restorer kit to clean the headlights.

The headlight switch allows you to turn on and off your headlights. When you press the button or pull the lever (depending on your vehicle) to turn on your headlights, the headlight switch is responsible for triggering the lights. A broken headlight switch means that you won’t be able to turn on your headlights. Driving without headlights is a hazard to you, your passengers, and your surroundings, and it can also result in an expensive ticket.

Ignition Switch Replacement

The ignition switch, located on the steering column or in the dashboard, takes the power from the battery and directs it to all the accessories and electrical components of your car. It also transfers the power to the starter when you turn the ignition key. If the starter does not receive power from the ignition key, the car will not start. When the ignition switch goes bad, your car may not start and the accessories (lights, radio, etc.) may not work. Replacing an ignition switch can be as simple as removing a few screws to access the ignition switch, or as complicated as removing the whole steering column.

After an ignition switch is replaced, all electrical components should be checked to ensure proper operation.

Check the condition of the ignition switch. | Remove and replace the ignition switch if it is bad. | Verify operation of electrical components.

The battery feeds power to ignition switch, so it is important for the ignition system that the battery is in good condition. Don’t put too much weight on your key ring because this can damage the key and the tumbler part of the ignition switch. If there is no power inside the car (none of the electrical components are working), have the mechanic inspect the main fuses. If the fuses are good, then the mechanic should inspect the ignition switch and other electrical components.

The ignition switch serves to send power from the battery. When you turn your key to turn on your vehicle, the ignition switch takes power from the battery and sends it to the starter, which allows your vehicle to turn on. When you turn on any electrical components in your vehicle (such as your lights, radio, and air conditioning), the ignition switch draws power from the battery, and sends it to these electrical components to power them. When your ignition switch stops working, your starter and your electrical components have no way of drawing power from your battery. With a faulty ignition switch, you won’t be able to use your radio, lights, or air conditioning, and you won’t be able to turn on your vehicle. In extreme cases, a broken ignition switch won’t allow you to turn your vehicle off, even if you remove the key.

Neutral Safety Switch Replacement

The neutral safety switch keeps the vehicle from starting when in any gear position other than Park or Neutral. In some vehicles, the switch also monitors gear selection and reverse light feedback data for the vehicle’s computer. Most often mounted to the left-hand side of the transmission, the switch is equipped in vehicles with a transaxle or automatic transmission. Some vehicle neutral safety switches are attached to the shifter mechanism.

Connected to the starter solenoid, the neutral safety switch completes the starter circuit, allowing | the power from the battery to reach the starter only while the gearshift remains in Park or Neutral. | The mechanic will check the other systems in your vehicle’s ignition system, such as the starter, battery, and alternator, to make sure those parts are not causing the problem. As a vehicle ages, the neutral safety switch deteriorates.

The vehicle is raised and supported on jack stands. The transmission shift lever and cable are removed. The electrical connector is removed from the switch. | The neutral safety switch is removed from the transmission. The transmission shaft seal is checked for leaks and replaced as needed. | The new neutral safety switch is installed on to the selector shaft and secured while aligning for proper installation alignment. | The shift lever and shift cable are reinstalled. The vehicle is checked for proper neutral safety switch operation before the vehicle is lowered off the jack stands. | The vehicle is scanned for codes and proper switch indication of gear ranges and road tested for proper operation.

Replace a faulty neutral safety switch as soon as possible; otherwise, the vehicle will stop working or suffer engine damage. When the switch does not work properly, the vehicle might jump into gear upon startup. This not only causes damage to the engine itself, but poses a great physical threat to surrounding objects and people. Our expert mechanics will diagnose the neutral safety switch to see if it needs adjustment. Transmissions that exhibit excessive vibrations cause the switch to go out of alignment over time, which makes vehicle ignition more difficult. When inspecting the neutral safety switch, our expert mechanics check for dirt and grease build-up, moisture, and corrosion. They will also use a test light to confirm a connection through the switch to the starter solenoid.

Replace a faulty neutral safety switch promptly, as driving without a functional switch presents a danger to other drivers, passengers, and those around the vehicle. A faulty neutral safety switch damages the engine, as the vehicle jerks into gear upon startup. The reverse lights could stop working on some vehicles, which creates a safety hazard especially during inclement weather or nighttime.

Power Seat Switch Repair

The power seat switches are located inside the car and are usually attached to the seat or door panel. The switch sends the power to the seat motor(s) allowing you to move the seat in various selectable directions. If the switch is malfunctioning, the seat will not move or moves only in limited directions. It is common for debris to get stuck in tracks preventing the seats from moving. Cleaning the debris may resolve the problem, but if not, we can help.

If your power seat isn’t working, it may not be a problem with the switch; it could also be a malfunctioning power seat motor, or debris in the seat tracks.

Remove the seat. | Inspect the switch & motor. | Ensure that the motor is not clogged with debris. | Inspect the wiring. | Remove and replace power seat switch if faulty. | Check operation of the seat in each direction of movement.

Keep materials such as pens, pencils, trash, and other debris from under your seat. The debris can block the seat tracks and even burn the circuit in the switch prematurely. If the seat does not move when you press the switch, have the mechanic inspect the fuse for that circuit and the switch for the seat.

When you press the power seat button on your seat or door, the power seat switch triggers a motor which then moves your seat forward or backward on a track. This control allows you to find the optimal placement for your seat, so that the gas and brake pedals are the right distance for your feet, and so that you are comfortable. When the power seat switch fails, the seats won’t move when you press the button, and you won’t be able to control the placement of your seat. Improper seat placement affects a driver’s ability to safely operate the vehicle at the correct distance from the pedals and steering wheel.

Power Window Switch Repair

The power window switches are located inside the car, usually on each door. This switch takes input from either the driver or other passengers, and sends power to the window motor, which opens or closes the window. The common reason for the window to not move up or down is a fuse, window regulator, or window motor failure.

If the power window switch is not controlling the windows, it may not be a malfunctioning switch. Instead, it could be a problem with the window motor, fuse, or regulator.

Remove and replace the power window switch. | Inspect window motor, wiring, connectors, power source, and fuses. | Check for proper operation of windows.

The power window system is a closed system, so it will not be inspected during regular maintenance or service. As soon as you notice that one of the power window switches isn’t working, or is behaving abnormally, you should schedule an inspection. Power window switches normally have a long lifespan, but you should avoid using them excessively and unnecessarily; playing with the switch can shorten the lifespan of the system.

Power window systems allow you to roll down and roll up the windows in a modern vehicle. When you press the window buttons located on the inside of the doors (or sometimes on the center console), the switch triggers the power window motor, which rolls the windows up or down. When the power window switch malfunctions, there’s no communication between the window buttons and the power window motor, and you’ll be unable to roll up or down the window.

Turn Signal Switch Replacement

The turn signal switch, located inside the car on the steering column, allows you to turn the signal bulbs on. Properly functioning turn signal lights are legally mandatory.

The wiring for brake lights usually goes through the turn signal switch. This means that if the turn signal switch has gone bad, your brake lights may not be working. | Some vehicles use a “combination” switch. This switch operates the turn signals, running lights, and headlights.

Inspect the switch, fuses, and wirings. | Remove and replace the switch if faulty. | Operate the turn signals verify operation of the exterior lights.

If your turn signal lights do not operate, your mechanic will visually inspect the fuse(s) and operate the switch a bit to see if he can determine where the problem is. Your mechanic should inspect all lights during every major service event.

When you deploy the turn signal lever on your steering column, the turn signal switch is responsible for turning on your turn signals. Turn signals are a very important safety feature that alerts drivers all around you that your vehicle will soon be making a turn. When your turn signal switch dies, you have no way of turning on your turn signals. This not only makes your car less safe, but it is also illegal, and you can be given a very pricy fix-it ticket.

Car AC Control Switch Replacement

Modern cars have much more advanced climate control technology than they had a few decades ago. It’s now commonplace for air conditioning to be included as standard equipment. That equipment has also become more efficient and is capable of providing greater comfort. Controlling the system is pretty simple – you press a button to turn on the air conditioner, and then adjust the cooling level and fan speed to your needs. The AC control switch is what allows you to turn the air conditioner on and off, essentially operating the entire system with a push of a button. When the button is pressed, the AC circuit is powered up from the relay so the interior can be cooled. However, like all electronic components, the AC control switch is susceptible to wear and tear.

The AC control switch is located behind the trim panels on your car’s HVAC system and should not | be accessed without the proper tools and knowledge. Without an operating switch, the AC will not work.

The AC control panel is removed from the center of the dash | The defective AC control switch is removed from the control panel | The new AC control switch is installed into the panel | The AC control panel is reinstalled into the center of the dash | The AC control switch is tested for proper AC operation

Without an operating AC control switch, you have no way of turning your air conditioning on. Normal wear and tear through regular use can eventually wear out the switch. Because replacing the switch involves accessing the actual AC control system behind the dash, have one of our expert mechanics perform the repair.

Your car’s air conditioning system is important for your comfort. Without a working AC control switch, you can’t use your AC, so it’s important that the switch is replaced when it fails. Have one of our expert mechanics inspect and repair the AC system, including a faulty AC control switch, if it is faulty.
