Trunk Latch Adjustment Service

It’s about a good tight fit for your trunk and keeping water away from your valuables. On vehicles with batteries, modules and fuses in the trunk area, the latch serves an extremely important purpose in the safe operation of your vehicle. The trunk latch can be anything from a metal hook and locking mechanism built into the center of your trunk, to a maze of wires, motors and sensors that must be in perfect operation for the latch to operate properly. If one of these components is not installed properly or is malfunctioning, you may have a trunk that may lock only on one side or not lock at all.

Trunk latches are made out of metal, and like any metallic parts that encounter weight and friction during their use, these parts are designed to wear out over time and become misaligned. | On cars with power trunks and hatches, these intricate components become even more complicated. The components and sensors that help guide them must all work in concert, and this includes ensuring that the new latch mechanism works with your key fob.

If your trunk or hatch looks uneven or your isn’t staying shut at the first “thunk,” it’s time to have a professional look at it. Latches can often be adjusted to save the cost of their replacement. Enlist one of our mechanics to find the quickest and most reasonable solution to your trunk latch issue. What are the common symptoms indicating you may need to to adjust the trunk latch? If you find that one part of your trunk seems slightly high than the other, your latch may need to be adjusted. On older vehicles, you may also find that the trunk has difficulty closing. This is especially the case for any car owner that drives a convertible year round. The specifications for top storage and power operation on a modern day convertible are within mere millimeters, and the constant use of the trunk latch on these vehicles often leads to wear issues. The trunk latch can also become misaligned through the constant interference of an object. If you have ever overpacked your trunk and had trouble closing it, it’s because something is interfering with the operation of your latches. This part can easily can be misaligned or even broken off if this pressure on the latches is ignored.

On late models in particular, a trunk or hatch that doesn’t shut correctly can lead to a long line of unexpected issues – many of which can involve your electrical system, which can be tricky to diagnose. Then there is also the unpleasantness of having a wet trunk, a latch that won’t properly open, and even a trunk that won’t stay shut unless you use a bungee cord. So if your trunk or hatch is giving you trouble, it’s important to address it sooner than later.

Trunk Latch Release Cable Replacement Service

In some vehicles, the trunk latch release cable allows the driver to press a button from the cabin to open the trunk; in others, it is a mechanical lever inside the vehicle that the driver pulls. It operates similarly to the hood latch release system, but has the benefits of a secondary (and sometimes tertiary) opening system in case of trunk latch release cable failure. A mechanically-released trunk latch release cable runs from the lever to the latch inside your trunk. When the release is pulled, the cable pulls the trunk latch release to open the trunk. In a trunk release with an electric button, the cable runs from an electrical actuator to the trunk latch. If the cable breaks at any point, the in-cab trunk opening system won’t operate. Drivers will need to use their key to open the trunk (or the trunk latch release on their remote/key fob). If the cable becomes seized, the cable could get stuck in the open position, not allowing the trunk to latch closed.

It is difficult to verify the condition of the trunk latch release cable visually, as it is completely hidden. | The cable should last the lifetime of the vehicle, but it can be damaged by corrosion or excessive physical force.

The vehicle trunk is opened and any trim paneling is removed for easy access to the cable | The defective cable is removed from the latch and the interior | The new cable is installed and connected to the latch and control handle | The trim paneling is reinstalled | The trunk latch release system is tested for proper operation

If the trunk latch release isn’t operable from the interior button/release, but the trunk opens by using the key, the release cable is likely broken or seized. Have one of our expert mechanics replace the trunk latch release cable.

Because your trunk has more than one means of opening, replacing your trunk latch release cable is not a high priority. This is a convenience feature rather than one integral to safety or vehicle operation. Have the trunk release cable replaced at your convenience

Trunk Latch Replacement Service

The trunk latch is the mechanism that holds a trunk closed. When the trunk latch is engaged, the trunk can only be opened by a handheld remote or a key. In most newer cars, a trunk latch works much the same as a door latch. Generally, two components make up the trunk latch: the U shaped anchor, which sits in the frame of the vehicle, and the latching mechanism in the lid to the trunk. Either or both pieces could fail, causing the trunk latch to malfunction. The trunk latch can be triggered with the same handheld remote that opens the car door. Older cars generally use a cylinder system that can be opened with a key. This system operates using a cylinder and striker, and the key that is used generally matches the door locks. The latch that holds the trunk locked is located in the striker.

While this may not seem like a serious issue, if the trunk latch opens suddenly in traffic, debris could be blown out of your trunk and into the path of other vehicles.

The trunk latch is verified to be needing replaced | The defective trunk latch is removed | The new trunk latch is installed | The inside trim panel is reinstalled to complete repair | The trunk is checked for proper operation

If you suspect that the trunk latch has failed, or is about to fail, call our expert mechanics to diagnose the trunk latch. There are different components that make up the trunk latch, so it’s important to know which part is failing before repairs are begun.

While it may not be a huge deal to the driver, it will be a huge deal to anyone who ends up with a trunk load of groceries in their path if items are blown out of an open trunk. Any items secured in the trunk may not be safe.

Trunk Lift Support Shocks Replacement Service

When you want to access the trunk to insert or remove your belongings, you need the trunk lid to stay open on its own so you have both hands free. Some trunks use tension bars to spring the trunk lid open, but they can be difficult to close, and a broken tension bar can cause bodily harm. Another method used by auto manufacturers to hold a trunk lid up is a pair of trunk lift support shocks. They are a gas-filled cylinder that puts a precise amount of pressure on the bottom of the trunk lid. When the trunk is released and lifted approximately halfway, the trunk supports lift the trunk lid to the fully open position and hold it in place, leaving both of your hands free to load or unload your trunk. The amount of force required to hold the trunk lid open is carefully matched between the gas shocks and the weight of the trunk lid. When closing the trunk lid, there is minimal resistance applied, making closing the trunk easy and safe. When the trunk lid no longer opens easily, doesn’t stay open on its own, or drops suddenly when closing, the trunk lift support shocks may be weak.

If your trunk lift support shocks are too weak to hold your trunk lid or liftgate up, the lid can fall on you and cause injury. | Trunk support shocks are gas-charged. Puncture or incineration of your old trunk supports can | cause injury or death. Always have your trunk supports replaced as a pair.

The faulty trunk lift support shock is identified | The trunk is manually supported and the defective trunk lift support shock is removed | The new trunk lift support shock is installed and manual support is removed | The trunk is checked for proper operation of the trunk lift support shocks | The trunk is opened and closed to check trunk lid operation and that the lift supports hold trunk in the up position

If the trunk lid doesn’t remain open on its own, is difficult to lift up, or falls on its own, you may need to replace your trunk supports.

A falling trunk lid can be dangerous to an unsuspecting person using the trunk. It can cause bodily harm, and as such, should be replaced as soon as a fault is noted.

Trunk Lock Actuator Replacement Service

The trunk or hatch on your vehicle is designed to store or transport your belongings safely. It is locked with a keyed lock cylinder, and if your vehicle is equipped with a power trunk release button, there is a trunk lock actuator mounted to the keyed lock cylinder. When entry to the trunk is requested through electrical input, either by a trunk release button inside the car or by pressing the trunk release button on a key fob, the trunk lock actuator releases the trunk latch in the same way turning a key in the lock cylinder would. When the trunk lock actuator fails or is too weak to release the trunk latch, you may not be able to access your belongings in the trunk without using the key in the lock cylinder.

The trunk actuator can usually be activated by button or remote control. If one doesn’t work, try the other to see if the problem is with the actuator or the control method. | If the power trunk lock actuator doesn’t function, a manual trunk lock cylinder can be used to access your belongings in the trunk. | In some vehicles, a valet switch in the glove box will turn off the power trunk release. If the trunk | lock release doesn’t work, check to make sure the valet switch is not engaged. A wiring problem or burnt fuse may mimic the symptoms of a failed trunk lock actuator. Have one of our expert mechanics check the system to determine the exact cause of failure.

The trunk lock actuator is verified to be broken | The inside trunk trim panel trunk is removed and the broken lock actuator is removed | The new trunk lock actuator is installed | The trunk lock actuator is tested for proper operation and the inside trim panels are reinstalled | The trunk lid is opened and closed to check the latch and lock actuator operation

If the key still turns in the lock cylinder but the trunk will not open with either the trunk release button inside the car or on your key fob, you may need to replace the trunk lock actuator.

The trunk lock actuator is part of a convenient power trunk release system. If it doesn’t operate as designed, you’ll have to open the trunk through the manual key lock cylinder instead. You can replace it at your convenience.

Car Door Latch Replacement Service

The car has at least two door handles per door: one on the inside and another on the outside. Due to frequent use, they will eventually break down and could need repair. Sometimes the handle itself is fine, but there is a problem with the door latch assembly that prevents the door from shutting and locking properly.

A damaged door latch can be the result of a damaged exterior or interior door handle. | Damaged door latches cannot be repaired, only replaced.

Remove the door panel to gain access. | Remove and replace the broken door handle. | Inspect door latch and replace if not working. | Check door for proper operation. | Reinstall door panel.

Anytime you notice a problem with a door in your vehicle, you should schedule an inspection. If your door feels stuck or finicky, or if it needs an extra hard slam to close it fully, then it’s time to schedule an inspection before the damage worsens.

A door latch is responsible for ensuring that your vehicle’s doors stay closed. When this latch becomes damaged, your door won’t be able to stay closed. A door that won’t close is an extreme safety hazard, as you’ll have no way of securing the door and keeping it from flying open.

Car Door Lock Actuator Replacement Service

A door lock actuator is the component in electronic door locks that is responsible for locking and unlocking the vehicle’s doors. When a button is pressed to lock or unlock a door, the door lock switch triggers the actuator. A small motor in the actuator then triggers a series of gears. The final gear is connected to a rack and pinion set of gears, which converts the rotational motion of the motor into the vertical motion necessary to lock or unlock the door.

Some modern vehicles have a complete door lock assembly which can’t be separated into individual components. These vehicles will need the entire assembly replaced, rather than just the actuator.

The door lock system shouldn’t be checked unless you notice that something is wrong. As soon as you notice your vehicle behave oddly when you lock or unlock the doors, schedule an inspection.

A door lock actuator is responsible for locking and unlocking your doors. When the door lock switch is triggered, the actuator’s motor powers a set of gears that lock or unlock your door. When the actuator stops working, there is no communication between the door lock switch and the door locks, and you’ll be unable to lock or unlock the door.

Car Door Lock Switch Replacement Service

Door lock switches are electrical rocker switches that are used to lock and unlock car doors. When you activate the switch, it sends a signal to the door lock relay to activate the door lock actuator inside the door. Due to frequent use, the switches and electrical currents running through them eventually fail, requiring replacement.

Many modern vehicles have a complete lock assembly which needs to be replaced if the switch dies.

Test the operation of the electric door locks. | Test the fuse for that circuit. | Test the relay. | Replace the faulty door lock switch. | Test for proper operation of electric door locks.

Door lock systems are not a part of regular maintenance, but it’s not rare for the switches to die. If you notice that your vehicle is not locking and unlocking when you press the corresponding buttons, it’s time to schedule an inspection.

The door lock switch acts as a remote for the door lock actuator, which is responsible for locking and unlocking your vehicle’s doors. When you press the lock or unlock button, the switch triggers the actuator, and the door is locked or unlocked. When the lock switch dies, the actuator has no way of being activated, and your door locks will stop functioning.

Exterior Car Door Handle Replacement Service

The car has at least two door handles per door: one on the inside and another on the outside. Due to frequent use, they will eventually break down and could need repair. Sometimes the handle itself is fine, but there is a problem with the door latch assembly that prevents the door from shutting and locking properly.

Sometimes the visible part of the door handle needs to be replaced, and sometimes the mechanism hidden inside the door needs to be replaced. | If the exterior door handle doesn’t work, there’s a good chance that the interior door handle is also faulty. | If physical damage (such as an accident) has caused the door handle to break, there may also be damage to the door lock switch or door lock actuator.

Remove the door panel to gain access. | Remove and replace the broken door handle. | Inspect door latch and replace if not working. | Check door for proper operation. | Reinstall door panel.

As soon as you notice that your door is having difficulty opening, you should schedule an inspection. If your exterior door handle stops working entirely, stop trying to use it: trying to force the door can cause further damage. If you notice that your exterior door handle is feeling fragile, you should also schedule an inspection.

An exterior door handle exists so that you can open your vehicle from the outside. When the exterior door handle malfunctions, you’ll have to enter your vehicle from a different door, or keep your window rolled down so you can use the interior door handle (if it works). An exterior door handle that doesn’t work is a large nuisance to any driver.
